Needle roller cage assemblies are the first choice if bearings which have a small installation space despite high demands on load-bearing capacity and stiffness are required.
Since needle roller cage assemblies consist only of needles and the appropriate cages, the needles run directly in the housing borehole or on the shaft. This means that all components which are used as a raceway must be hardened and polished.
There are single-row and dual-row needle roller cage assemblies.

Needle bushes can withstand high radial forces and at the same time they provide high stiffness. They are mostly used if only very little installation space is available.
Similar to needle roller cage assemblies, needle bushes also consist of needles and a guiding cage, but are additionally provided with a,thin outer ring. Needle bushes are used if a hardened shaft is available but cannot use the housing borehole as a raceway.
Needle bushes are also available in single-row or dual-row versions.

Needle roller bearings are fitted with a thin-walled outer ring in a similar manner to needle bushes. They can also withstand high radial forces at minimum space requirements They are mainly used where only very little installation space is available.
Since cup needle roller bearings are enclosed on one side they are suitable for forming the end of bearing groups at shaft ends. The bearing is protected against dirt and moisture thanks to the floor (in other words the enclosed side) and can even withstand low axial guidance forces. Since this type of bearing is fitted with an outer ring, the housing borehole does not have to be designed as a raceway.

Solid needle bearings are single or dual-row bearings and consist of machined outer rings with borders, needle bearings and (depending on model) removable inner rings.
If particularly-space-saving bearings are required, needle bearings without inner rings can be constructed as long as the shaft raceway is hardened and polished. If the shaft has not been designed as a raceway, then bearings with inner rings have to be constructed.
Since lubrication is necessary, most solid needle bearings are fitted with a circumferential groove with lubrication bore.

Adjustable needle bearings consist of a non-machined outer bush, supporting rings in plastic, outer rings with a spherical shell surface, needle roller cage assemblies and (depending on model) removable inner rings.
Adjustable needle bearings are used if static alignment errors on the shaft with respect to the housing have to be compensated for. Alignment errors of up to 3° can be compensated using this bearing type. These bearings may not be used to withstand swivelling and tumbling movements!
If the shaft has been designed as a raceway, bearings without inner rings can be used. Otherwise, bearings with inner rings are required.

Inner rings are manufactured in hardened roller bearing steel and have either finely-machined or polished raceways.
This type of inner ring is only used the needle bearings. They are used if the shaft cannot be used as raceway, since they are neither hardened, polished or similar.
Furthermore, it is sometimes necessary to use wider inner rings. This is the case if larger axial displacements must be made possible, or if an optimum running surface must be provided for the sealing lips.
