V-belts drive belt drives and have a trapezoidal cross-section. They make use of the fact that the friction at the flanks of the belt is considerably higher in a wedge-shaped groove than a flat contact surface. They must be manufactured as a continuous loop and consist of rubber with a textile or steel wire insert. They can transmit higher torques than flat belts at the same space requirement. The forces which act on the bearings are considerably lower due to the higher friction. However, their effectiveness is slightly lower than flat belts in comparison.
It is also possible to position several V-belts next to each other. They elongate gradually during use. For this reason it is important to replace all the belts at the same time in drives with several parallel belts.
In practice, four different types of V-belts are mainly used:
Classical V-belts are encased in a fabric layer and stand out due to their high operational safety.
Narrow V-belts are also encased but have improved power transmission properties.
Open-flanked V-belts have advantages in wear, running precision and frictional connection.
Moulded notched V-belts are preferred for new drives because they have longer service lives, a lower energy consumption and higher power transmission.
V-belts are the best-known type of drive belts. They are used in motor vehicles, for example to drive the alternator, the water pump or the hydraulic pump for the power steering system. In addition, they are used in household washing machines to make the drum turn.
Since V-belts are relatively high, the inside of the belt crushes during deflection and therefore causes warming. They are therefore toothed in order to make smaller pulley diameters possible.
V-belt designation: Profile designation + length. For example XPZ630. If you do not know the designation, please contact the ekugellager.de customer service. We need either the internal or external length of the old belt as a dimension.
